The North Bay Heritage Gardener’s Program has over 50 garden beds and approximately 265 volunteers. They have been actively beautifying the waterfront gardens in North Bay for over 23 years. Each team spends about an hour or two a week as the gardeners care for their adopted garden beds. The Heritage Gardeners are a group of friendly and welcoming volunteers who are always looking to share their passion for their community with others. It’s easy to join the Heritage Gardeners as there is no previous gardening experience required!
The volunteers all have their own motivations for joining including: socializing with friends, learning about gardening and meeting new people. Secondary school students can enjoy being outside and gardening while earning their volunteer hours. The gardeners also get to be a part of a volunteer incentive program that provides a t-shirt and a membership card that offers discounts at select local stores and businesses.
The Heritage Gardeners Program centers on horticultural education and supporting the environment. Every spring and fall the Heritage Gardeners host a number of Education Nights that are free and open to the public. There are plenty of learning opportunities that come with being a Heritage Gardener. Each gardening team is led by a knowledgeable team leader who provides gardening education and guidance for their team. The gardens use local native species, and some have specific focuses like being drought tolerant or pollinator friendly.
Heritage Gardeners have a special dedication and a passion for their garden beds. With giving back to the community, gardeners gain the companionship of their team and take pride in their work to beautify the waterfront for everyone in North Bay to enjoy. It’s community spirit like the Heritage Gardeners that make cities like North Bay beautiful.
The Heritage Gardeners are always welcoming new members. You can join a team or make a team of our own and have a part in keeping North Bay’s waterfront beautiful. You can visit our volunteer page on our website for registration forms and see a full list of garden beds needing a team and teams looking for new members.
